A critical examination reveals that some app development companies, especially major organizations within the social media industry, have leveraged sophisticated UX design principles and a deep understanding of human psychology not merely to enhance user experience, but to maximize engagement and, consequently, boost profits, often at the expense of user well-being.

The Rise of the Always-On Society: A Chronology of Digital Immersion

The journey to our current state of digital immersion is a fascinating, yet cautionary, tale. In the early 2000s, internet access was predominantly desktop-bound, characterized by dial-up connections and nascent online communities. Communication was asynchronous, largely through email, or synchronous but tied to a physical location, like instant messaging on desktop applications. The subsequent years saw the refinement of these platforms, integrating advanced algorithms and sophisticated notification systems that pushed personalized content directly into users’ pockets, making constant connectivity not just possible, but expected.
